The first Manchester derby of the 2024/2025 season had everything fans could hope for, thrills, drama, and a sensational comeback. Manchester United claimed bragging rights, with Amad Diallo stealing the spotlight as they came from behind to defeat their city rivals, Manchester City, in an unforgettable showdown.

Both managers came into the game desperate for a win after shaky results in previous matches. Surprisingly, United’s starting lineup missed key attackers Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho. Still, the Red Devils had enough firepower to take on Pep Guardiola’s side.

First-Half Drama: Gvardiol Scores Amid Controversy
The game kicked off with both teams pushing for an early breakthrough, squandering several chances along the way. It wasn’t until the 36th minute that the deadlock was broken. Kevin De Bruyne’s dangerous cross took an unexpected deflection off Amad Diallo, landing perfectly for Josko Gvardiol, who headed it home to give City the lead.

Derbies are never without drama, and this one was no exception. Just a minute later, Kyle Walker theatrically tumbled after a soft head-to-head clash with United striker Rasmus Højlund. While no cards were issued, the incident added fuel to an already fiery contest.

United searched for an equalizer before halftime but went into the break trailing 1-0.

Second-Half Comeback: Diallo Delivers
The second half saw United dominating possession and mounting relentless pressure. Bruno Fernandes came close in the 73rd minute with a lobbed volley that narrowly missed the target.

United’s persistence finally paid off in the 88th minute when chaos in City’s defense led to a back-pass blunder by Matheus Nunes. Amad Diallo pounced on the mistake and was fouled in the box, earning a penalty for his side. Captain Bruno Fernandes coolly converted, sending Ederson the wrong way to level the scoreline.

Moments later, United struck again. Lisandro Martínez’s exquisite lobbed pass found Amad Diallo in a one-on-one with Ederson. Diallo displayed composure beyond his years, chipping the ball over the goalkeeper before slotting it into the net to complete United’s stunning comeback.

This victory marks another tactical masterclass by United’s new manager, Rúben Amorim, who has now defeated Pep Guardiola twice this season, once with Sporting CP in the Champions League and now with United in the league.

For Pep, the pressure is mounting as City has managed just one win in their last 11 matches, a worrying slump for the defending champions.

Other Highlights from Matchweek 16

“Never Say Never”: 10-Man Liverpool Fight Back to Draw Fulham

League leaders Liverpool showed their resilience, salvaging a 2-2 draw against Fulham despite being reduced to 10 men after Andrew Robertson’s red card in the 17th minute. Goals from Andreas Pereira and Rodrigo Muniz had Fulham in control, but Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota clawed Liverpool back into the game, ensuring they remain atop the table.

“Frustration at the Emirates”: Arsenal Held by Everton

Dominant but wasteful, Arsenal failed to break down a stubborn Everton defense in a goalless draw. The Gunners registered 13 shots but couldn’t find a way past Jordan Pickford, leaving them with only a point from a match they controlled from start to finish.

“Marching On”: Chelsea Close the Gap

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea continued their fine form, securing a 2-1 victory over Brentford. With five straight league wins, the Blues now sit just two points behind Liverpool, keeping the pressure on the league leaders.
