Super Eagles’ World Cup Dream Crashes on Penalties: DR Congo Sends Nigeria Packing

Sunday night in Rabat will sting for a long time in Super Eagles lore. In a tense, knife-edge African playoff final, Nigeria and DR Congo could not be separated after 120 minutes. The score: 1–1. But in the lottery of penalties, the Leopards held their nerve, and the Super Eagles’ World Cup hopes were snatched away 4–3 on spot kicks.
Nigeria came out roaring. Just three minutes in, Frank Onyeka smashed in a strike that took a deflection off a defender and wrong-footed DR Congo’s keeper. It was the kind of start every Super Eagles fan dream of, if only it had set the tone. But football, as ever, is under no obligation to go by the script.
DR Congo didn’t panic. They soaked up the early jolt and, in the 32nd minute, pounced. Meschack Elia turned dispossession into a clinical finish, ripping apart Nigeria’s momentary composure. From there, the match settled into a cagey, tactical battle.
As the game progressed, Nigeria looked for control through the flanks and via Alex Iwobi, but Congo remained disciplined, compact in defense, and lethal on the break. Victor Osimhen, Nigeria’s talisman, came close a couple of times, but his influence was cut short, he was forced off early in the second half due to injury.
By extra time, the fatigue was visible. Chances dried up. Congo seemed content to defend and frustrate, while Nigeria pushed, but without that cutting edge. A disallowed goal for the Leopards only added to the agony, still, 120 minutes came and went with no more goals.
Then came the rub, penalties. Nigeria started shakily. Calvin Bassey’s miss set an ominous tone, and Semi Ajayi couldn’t hold his nerve later. Meanwhile, DR Congo stayed cool. When it came down to the captain, Chancel Mbemba stepped up and buried the decisive kick, sending his nation into the inter-confederation playoff.
