When Liverpool spent a British-record fee to bring Alexander Isak in from Newcastle United, expectations were sky-high. A striker with pace, size, and a proven scoring record, many thought he would slot into the frontline and deliver immediately. Instead, months later, Isak is still searching for form, and the reasons are both understandable and complex.

He didn’t have the luxury of a full pre-season. Much of the summer was spent away from Newcastle’s main squad as he pushed for the move, leaving him behind on match fitness and sharpness. For a striker whose game depends on timing and movement, this was a significant setback. Fitness and minor injuries have only compounded the problem. Isak has admitted his fitness hasn’t been optimal, and he’s yet to play a full 90-minute match for Liverpool. Without full physical readiness, sharp, decisive performances in the demanding Premier League are tough to deliver.

The tactical environment hasn’t helped either. Liverpool’s service to the striker hasn’t consistently matched Isak’s movement and style. Wingers and midfielders haven’t always delivered the kind of through balls or crosses that suit him, and compact defending from Premier League teams has exposed gaps in creating high-quality chances. The team itself is navigating a period of transition, with cohesion and confidence fragile, which naturally affects a new signing trying to find his rhythm.

Psychological pressure is another factor. At £125 million, Isak carries more than just the expectation to score; he’s under constant scrutiny from media, fans, and his own teammates. That pressure can stifle instinctive, free-flowing play, making it harder to regain confidence quickly.

Despite the slow start, there are signs of progress. Isak recently opened his Premier League goal account for Liverpool, a breakthrough that hinted at what’s possible once fitness and understanding click. This season, for him, is less about immediate goals and more about rebuilding rhythm, adapting to the system, and navigating the club’s challenges.

Ultimately, Isak’s lack of form isn’t a question of talent. Disrupted pre-season, fitness setbacks, tactical adjustments, and a team in transition have all played a role. With patience and support, the striker still has the potential to justify the investment and become a key player for Liverpool in the months ahead.
