INEC Eyes Digital Slips for 2027 Elections

INEC plans to allow computer-generated slips as an alternative to PVCs for voter accreditation in the 2027 elections. This initiative aims to enhance voter access and streamline the voting process through technological advancements.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, highlighted the potential benefits of this transition, stating that the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) supports the move away from PVCs as the sole means of voter identification. He emphasized that voters who already possess PVCs can continue to use them, but moving forward, computer-generated slips, either issued directly by INEC or downloaded from its official website, would suffice for voter accreditation.
This proposed change is part of a broader set of 142 recommendations identified by INEC to improve the electoral process, covering areas such as voter management, public communication, and election logistics.
One of the key motivations behind this proposal is to address challenges associated with PVC collection and to curb the malpractice of buying voter cards to disenfranchise citizens. By allowing computer-generated slips, INEC aims to reduce costs, ease logistical burdens, and enhance the integrity of the voting process.
However, for this initiative to be implemented, amendments to the current Electoral Act are required. INEC has indicated plans to engage with the National Assembly to seek the necessary legislative changes to facilitate this transition.
As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, this moves towards integrating technology into the electoral process reflects INEC’s commitment to improving voter access and ensuring a more efficient and transparent voting system.
