Tesla’s Robotaxi Trials in Austin Hit Roadblocks with Safety Issues

A recent public test of Tesla’s robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, revealed several driving issues and traffic incidents during its initial days, as seen in videos shared by selected participants. With Tesla’s financial future heavily tied to its self-driving technology and vehicle sales slowing, the stakes for these tests are significant. CEO Elon Musk has promised to roll out the service to more U.S. cities by the end of the year and envisions “millions of Teslas” achieving full autonomy by the middle of next year.
While Tesla enthusiasts involved in the trial praised the technology and shared clips of smooth rides, several incidents raised concerns among federal safety regulators and auto experts. Problems included robotaxis entering incorrect lanes, dropping passengers in unsafe locations like multi-lane roads and intersections, sudden braking, speeding, and even mounting curbs.
In one instance, a robotaxi veered into a lane designated for oncoming traffic for six seconds after failing to turn at an intersection despite having its blinker on. Another incident involved sudden braking without any visible obstacle, causing the passenger to lurch forward and drop their belongings. Yet another video captured a robotaxi stopping twice abruptly on the road near police vehicles with flashing lights. Tesla has safety monitors seated in the front passenger position for the trial. In one case, a monitor had to manually intervene when a delivery truck began reversing toward the robotaxi.
These issues highlight the challenges Tesla faces in perfecting its self-driving technology. While the promise of fully autonomous vehicles offers significant potential, these trials emphasize the importance of rigorous testing and oversight to ensure safety and reliability before mass deployment.
