In a significant demonstration of Nigeria’s commitment to global interfaith relations, President Bola Tinubu attended the inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Sunday, May 18, 2025. The event marked the commencement of Pope Leo XIV’s papacy, following the passing of Pope Francis in April.

With dignitaries from around the world, U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, and even European royals, filling the pews of St. Peter’s Basilica, President Tinubu proudly flew Nigeria’s flag among the global elite. The occasion was the official welcome of Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost, as the 267th Bishop of Rome following the passing of Pope Francis in April.

Before jetting off to Rome, Tinubu had sent a heartfelt message congratulating the new Pope, hailing his “life of faith and hope” and highlighting shared values between Nigeria and the Vatican, especially when it comes to peace, education, and healthcare.

For Tinubu, this wasn’t just about showing face; it was a move that showed Nigeria is paying attention, not just to politics and business, but also to spiritual leadership and the world’s need for unity across different faiths.
