When Alex Iwobi hit “post” on X (formerly Twitter), he probably didn’t expect to ignite another round of debate about the state of Nigerian football. But that’s exactly what happened after the Super Eagles star shared a short clip of the team’s accommodation in Rabat, Morocco, and let’s just say, it wasn’t giving “World Cup prep” vibes.

The video showed the outside of the Rive Hotel, the supposed base camp for Nigeria’s Super Eagles ahead of their 2026 World Cup qualifying clash against Gabon on November 13. What fans saw didn’t sit well, peeling paint, tired walls, and a setting that looked more like a forgotten lodge than the home of Africa’s three-time champions.

The backlash online was instant. Fans questioned how, with a ₦17.6 billion budget allocated for 2025, the national team could still end up in what one user called “a retirement centre for buildings.” Some argued that the interior might be decent, but most agreed the optics were embarrassing for a team preparing for such a crucial qualifier.

As Nigeria gears up for the CAF mini-tournament in Rabat, the focus should be on tactics, fitness, and form, not cracked walls and poor accommodation choices. Yet here we are, once again asking how football’s “Giant of Africa” keeps tripping over the basics.

For now, the players seem to be taking it in stride, but fans are making their voices heard loud and clear: if the Super Eagles are expected to soar, they at least deserve a nest worthy of their name.
