Lagos is a mega city that keeps growing in all aspects, but one thing that never ceases to change in the city is the stressful process of settling down, or as some might call it the house-hunting period.

House hunting in any part of the country can be tedious but none can be compared to Lagos. In a city where there are over 15 million residents and counting one can imagine the struggle in finding a conducive environment to settle down.

It is a whole challenge on its own and if you are a 9-5ver, then you’re in for the biggest task ever. From annoying updates from agents to landlords giving their unrealistic terms and conditions.

We know this, and that’s why we have curated a few tips to ease your worries when it comes to house hunting on Lagos Mainland.

Knowledge about the location

Getting a better knowledge about where you are going to get your house is always necessary because you don’t want to be caught unawares if it is a dangerous area.

Avoid Scam Agents (Scagents)

Nothing has to be more annoying than getting scammed off your funds you have been saving for your house rent. So, make sure to do better findings about the agent’s contact to avoid stories that touch.

Proximity

This is one of the struggles with agents, you tell them you want an apartment with good access to major roads so you can easily navigate to work and back but because they are steadily working hand in hand with your village people. They take you to a house with no good road that is far from civilization. When looking for accommodation its always good to get a place where you can be close to places you frequent daily especially work.

Flooding

You’re not an Israelite running from the Egyptians so don’t expect any saving when it starts pouring. Make sure the area you’re settling for doesn’t flood. Hint: your agent will lie to you as well as the landlord. So better excuse yourself and look for nearby shops or residents to ask. If possible, house hunt during the wet season just to be sure.

Avoid Religious Houses/Schools

You have to fully experience this process to understand it. Schools, churches and mosques are cool but the noise that comes with staying around them can be unbearable. Imagine after having a long day at work and the moment you get home and decide to relax, and the religious house close by starts rehearsing. So if you can, try as much as possible to avoid them.

Crib amenities

Is the house what you are looking for? Is there water? Is the power supply good enough? Are there outstanding bills from previous tenants? are there leakages on the roof? These are the questions you need to ask before settling for the apartment. You don’t want

Security

Don’t allow village people affect your senses when house hunting. Your security is very important when considering moving to a new area. go for gated estates if possible and asked the agent or landlord about the security of the area. also you can asked current tenants just to be sure.

Budget Budget Budget!!!

If you like follow the above steps without thinking about this one. Imagine finally finding the perfect apartment in a good and secured environs with band A power plan, yeah of course, it sounds good but like the saying “Better soup na money kill am”. How fat your pocket is determines the kind of apartment you’re likely to settle for. We cannot over emphasize this enough. Understanding your budget is actually very crucial when you are looking for a place to stay as knowing your budget would save both you and the agent’s time.

In conclusion, house hunting doesn’t have to be stressful and this can be achieved if the right steps are taken into consideration. We hope these tips eases the stress a bit. Happy house hunting.
