Next week, Meta will launch one of its biggest changes ever in how it fact-checks information across its platforms.

Starting March 18, Meta will introduce its version of Community Notes for U.S. users on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. The program is similar to Twitter’s crowdsourced fact-checking system, which became the platform’s primary tool for correcting false information after Elon Musk transformed it into X.

Meta’s leaders emphasize the importance of perfecting Community Notes in the U.S. before expanding it to other countries. The U.S. is Meta’s most profitable market, making it a crucial testing ground for this new feature. However, Meta might be cautious about expanding to regions like the European Union, where the European Commission is investigating X’s Community Notes system’s effectiveness.

This move could also reflect Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s desire to appease the Trump administration, which has previously accused Meta of censoring conservative viewpoints.
