“After School” is a Nigerian movie set in a high school. It tells the story of Mimi, a girl who works with her mom for a rich family. Mimi gets a chance to attend a fancy school because Mr. Kalu, her mother’s employer, helps her out. This puts her in the same school as Mr. Kalu’s daughter, Joan, who has a problem with Mimi.
Joan quickly devises a plan to rally her parents against Mimi and her mother. One of her plots was locking Mimi in the library and falsely accusing her of staying out late with boys at school.
To make matters worse, she plans a kidnapping of Mimi because she believes Mimi is getting too close to her crush and to help convince her father to send Mimi’s mom away.
In the end, truth prevails and Mimi is vindicated. Mimi and Alex’s relationship does not develop into a romantic one as they remain just friends. It seems a bit predictable, but that’s how the story was scripted.
Overall, “After School” is a gripping movie with good acting, though it sometimes uses familiar story elements from Nigerian films.
